Harmful Algal Bloom Has Been Detected in Upper Saranac Lake
USF Notice 9-5-23
A suspected Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) of cyanobacteria, AKA blue-green algae, has been identified in Upper Saranac Lake in Back Bay and the most northern end of the lake on Tuesday, Sept. 5 in the town of Santa Clara. At this time the suspected bloom is small and localized. The Upper Saranac Foundation (USF) is working with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), and the Adirondack Watershed Institute (AWI) at Paul Smith’s College; we will continue to monitor and collect water samples for analysis. The USF will advise lake residents as further information develops.
