Legal Challenges to Saranac Lakes Developments Continue

The attached link is to an article published April 1, 2024, in the Adirondack Explorer Newsletter that explains the latest legal issues related to the on-going attempt by the owner to develop the two marinas on Lower Saranac Lake.

This legal case, brought by the non-profit Protect the Adirondacks, also references the Upper Saranac Marina location on Fish Creek Ponds which has the same owner. The suit is asking the court to require the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to develop a carrying capacity study of the Saranac Lakes and extended watershed ponds to ensure the long-term survival of the watershed versus development around the watershed. The plaintiff argues the carrying capacity study is a mandate included in the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan, and should be completed before development can be approved and accuses the DEC of ignoring the study (or, its own?) requirements. The Master Plan was developed by the Adirondack Park Agency in cooperation with the DEC.

The Government Affairs Committee continues to monitor legal developments around the watershed and will react as appropriate to safeguard our lakes and ponds.
